Ambition and execution rarely travel the same path in science fiction. Sai R Anand and Saravanan Kuppusamy’s “Parallels” presents a sprawling narrative spanning two dimensions and multiple protagonists, yet its ambitious scope exceeds its technical grip.
The story opens with Jane’s keynote address on controlling dimensions beyond three-dimensional perception. When archaeologist David discovers a hidden chamber containing extraterrestrial remains, the plot accelerates through paramilitary assaults and submarine escapes. Detective Steven investigates impossible murders while David’s younger brother Vicky befriends Cyrus, a telepathic alien. The narrative’s most inventive element emerges when David is transported to WorldX, an alternate dimension where he meets June and joins a resistance movement against a tyrannical ruler bearing his own face.
The novel’s greatest strength lies in intellectual ambition. Cyrus’s philosophical monologues challenge conventional cosmology. His arguments that time is a human construct, that infinite cyclical universes exist beyond conventional physics, and that humans possess dormant interdimensional travel capacity elevate the work beyond standard adventure narratives. The dystopian worldbuilding in WorldX, with twin moons, collapsed infrastructure, and authoritarian systems, creates vivid environmental hostility.
Yet ambition and execution diverge sharply. The novel’s 38 chapters attempt to service too many threads simultaneously. Character development suffers as secondary characters remain functional rather than fully realized. David and Jane’s connection lacks sufficient development to justify their eventual emotional investment. Pacing inconsistencies compound this problem, oscillating between metaphysical discussions and rapid action without stable tonal foundation.

The romantic subplot exemplifies this: June’s sudden realization that she loves David appears abrupt given limited meaningful interaction.
Scientific rigor gives way to convenient plot mechanics. Characters gain abilities precisely when needed. Cyrus suddenly controls an alien spacecraft. David navigates WorldX’s technology through instinct. The manuscript bears marks of rushed editing with inconsistent capitalization and grammatical irregularities that undermine professional polish.
The novel’s conclusion raises narrative logic questions. David cannot return to WorldX after Cyrus’s sacrifice, yet the narrative implies his eventual return. The ending’s ambiguity works better as a series opening than a standalone work.
The authors bring legitimate credentials. Sai R Anand holds a postgraduate Mathematics degree and teaching certification. Saravanan Kuppusamy, a Software Engineer, trained in filmmaking and has published internationally. The novel’s cultural originality stands out. Integration of Tamil philosophical concepts, Siddha traditions, and Vedic cosmology into Western SF frameworks distinguishes this work from mainstream conventionality.
