In Predator: Badlands, director Dan Trachtenberg takes the celebrated Predator franchise in an audacious new direction. Rather than simply revisiting the familiar man-vs-alien formula, this instalment centres on the alien protagonist himself — the young Yautja hunter Dek — banished by his clan, thrust into a savage alien world, and forced to prove his worth.
The partnership that ensues between Dek and the damaged android Thia (played by Elle Fanning) gives the film its emotional heartbeat. Thia’s broken limbs, fierce intelligence and odd charm meet Dek’s guttural warrior code and savage instincts — the result is a mix of brutality, odd humour and surprisingly tender moments.
Visually the film is striking. The remote planet setting, the dangerous fauna, the Yautja rituals and the vast scale of the conflict give the movie a grand, even mythic feel. Critics note that the film “feels bigger, stranger and more emotional than previous films”. The lore of the Predator world is deepened — clan rules, honour systems and alien culture become narrative rather than décor.
That said, the shift in perspective won’t satisfy all fans. Those expecting the same visceral human survival horror of the earlier entries may feel disoriented: the focus is less on human characters and more on alien identity struggles. Rotten Tomatoes commentary warns that while the film is “fascinating” and bold, it “loses some of the fear” the franchise originally thrived on.
In typical Predator fashion, the action is relentless but now interwoven with emotional stakes and existential dread. The film succeeds best when it honours the alien mythos while reaching into themes of exile, worth and alliance. Some sequences feel a little predictable, and the tonal shifts can be jarring, but the overall effect is fresh and invigorating.
Verdict: If you’re a fan of sci-fi action that doesn’t merely replay old tropes, Predator: Badlands is a commendable leap forward. It retains the feral thrills of the Predator brand while adding soul and ambition. It may not satisfy purists yearning for the original template, but for newcomers or those open to evolution, this is a bold, entertaining and emotionally resonant ride.
