Jeffrey Archer, one of Britain’s most widely read and commercially successful authors, has confirmed that his forthcoming novel will be his last. The 85-year-old writer revealed that End Game, the latest instalment in his William Warwick series, will mark the conclusion of a career that has spanned half a century.
Archer, whose books have sold more than 275 million copies worldwide and been translated into over 40 languages, made the announcement in an exclusive interview this week. He described the decision as both inevitable and bittersweet, noting that while he remains as passionate about storytelling as ever, he feels it is time to put down the pen after more than 30 novels, short story collections and plays.
First rising to prominence in 1976 with Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less, Archer cemented his reputation with the multi-generational Kane and Abel, which has remained in print since its release in 1979 and continues to attract new readers. Over the years, he has balanced his literary success with a controversial political career, yet it is his storytelling that has ensured his place in popular culture.
The William Warwick series, launched in 2019, follows the titular detective as he navigates Britain’s criminal underworld and the upper echelons of society. End Game is expected to provide a fitting close to Warwick’s journey, tying together threads from earlier novels while delivering the twists and cliff-hangers for which Archer is renowned.
In announcing the book, Archer expressed gratitude to his readers, many of whom have remained loyal since his earliest publications. “I never imagined, when I wrote my first novel nearly fifty years ago, that I would still be writing today. It has been the greatest privilege to tell these stories and to have them embraced around the world,” he said.
End Game will be published next spring by HarperCollins. While it signals the end of Archer’s career as a novelist, publishers and readers alike agree that his influence on the landscape of popular fiction will endure for generations to come.
